Chapter 15

James passed the two kids’ bedrooms and went down the stairs to find Fabian brooding on the couch.

He had taken the time to get dressed in a black suit of his own, shave, and comb his hair, but his body language communicated his misery.

“Did she stop returning your texts?” James asked, sitting next to him.

“She responds. One or two words at a time.”

“But she’s still coming to the ball tonight?”

“Yes. Probably. Dunno.” Fabian laid his head in his hands. “I can’t believe this. We promised each other no drama. I thought we were in a good spot. Then it blew up. Fiery fucking explosion. Out of nowhere.”

“Was it? Holidays, family stuff, Fire Chief wedding stuff?”

“She’s never been into that stuff. So I didn’t think it was a big deal when I made a comment about having a kid together. Boom. Freaking dynamite.”

“You mentioned kids and she lost it?” James asked. Fabian had been tight-lipped about the situation, beyond stating they’d argued about their future. “You were into her for three years, have been together for over a year, and you’ve never discussed kids?”

“We had an understanding. Wedding, then kids would happen. I only moved in in October. Wasn’t going to push anything, and there she was, getting upset at her family’s party because they didn’t care about her accomplishments.”

“How did this lead to her getting upset with you over kids?” James didn’t follow the logic here.

Fabian covered his face for a second and used the word for ‘boss’ in Portuguese. “You’ve gotta understand, chefe. After the anti-bridal shower and hearing you and Ryan and Doyle talk about your women when they were pregnant. And seeing the chief react.”

“You listened to advice from a guy who was divorced three times, a man who met your girl’s best friend while dressed as a dinosaur, and a guy who abandoned his wife when she was ‘surprise-pregnant?’” James wasn’t particularly proud of how he’d almost lost Caroline over his response to her unexpected pregnancy.

“Yes, but it turned out great for you. You started out with your trauma and world-ending attitude, and thought she was infertile. Completely fixed and overcome by having enough sex to keep her pregnant all the time.”

“It doesn’t work like that. She got world-class medical care, including a laparoscopic surgery before I met her, which allows us to have children. And even now, it’s not as easy as it looks.”

Fabian must have noticed the inflection in James’s voice. “‘Now’?” He pumped James on the shoulder. “Good work. See, you’ve shown life begins at forty, with three kids under four.”

“We’re having them back-to-back because with Caroline’s issues, it’s our best chance.” James realized Fabian’s delaying tactic for what it was. “How exactly did you set Cassie off? Your only big fight in the past was your drunk, jealous tirade about the fire chief.”

“It wasn’t that. I told her I wanted to get her pregnant this year. While I was in her. Dressed as Santa Claus.”

“Oh.”

James couldn’t come up with a suitable response to that revelation.
